Captain Travis O. Evans
10/30/1922 - 1/4/2026
Captain Travis Evans led a remarkable life.
Born in 1922, Travis migrated from Oklahoma to California as a young boy during the Great Depression.
He lived his life on the ocean, serving as a tugboat operator, a ship's captain, and a commercial fisherman.
In his dedication to the maritime community, he helped form the Port San Luis Harbor Commission, as well as creating the Port San Luis Fisherman's Memorial.
Travis was deeply active in civic affairs. He served on the Avila Beach School Board, the California Coastal Commission, the California Seafood Council, the Pacific Fisheries Management Council, among others.
For his dedicated services, Travis has received the Senator Hayakawa Citizen Award, the Outstanding Service Award from the California Men's Colony (CMC), the Outstanding Citizen Award from the City of Grover Beach, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Central Coast Aquarium, just to name a few.
A devout Christian and licensed lay pastor and volunteer, Travis shared his faith through prison ministries at the CMC and the California Youth Authority. He also helped to physically and financially build three churches, including the New Life Community Church in Pismo Beach, where he was a charter member.
Travis remained strong and active in the community, clear into his 100's. Remarkable!
Travis was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 75 years, Katherine Evans, and his sons, Richard Evans and Tom Evans. He is survived by his children Eileen Herrera, Fred Evans, Phil Evans, Susie Martin, Jan Evans and Kerry Nechodom, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
