Shirley Mae Rhyne (1943 – 2024)

Shirley Mae Rhyne, 81, of Grover Beach CA, passed away on August 17, 2024, after battling
C.O.P.D. for many years.

Shirley was born on March 12, 1943, the only child of Louis and Isabel Vecente in Santa
Maria, CA.

She married Norval Chambers at the age of 15, and after giving birth to her two sons, James
Chambers, 65 of Nipomo, CA and David Chambers, 62 of Atascadero, CA, returned to
school and graduated from Arroyo Grande High School by passing the GED test. Her sons
attended her high school graduation.

Shirley was a lifelong resident of Grover Beach which she truly loved. You could find her
walking on the beach with her dog, feeding the fish and frogs in the back yard tank,
gardening with the grandkids or immersed in her latest book.

Shirley loved to attend the Portuguese Celebrations of St Anthony and continued to receive
communion throughout her life.

Though she worked several jobs in her life, Shirley lived for her family. She was a dedicated
wife, mother and grandmother. Her world revolved around her two grandsons, Jimmy
Chambers, 38 of Grover Beach, CA and Billy Chambers, 35 of Denver, CO. She was “the
greatest grandma ever.”

On July 24, 1976, she married Richard H. Rhyne and remained his companion until his
death on July 3, 2014.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Louis Vecente and Isabelle Hawkins,
stepfather Reginald Hawkins, first husband and father of her children Norval Chambers,
husband Richard Rhyne and sister Debbie Vecente.

She is survived by her children: James Chambers and wife Patti, David Chambers and wife
Leila, her grandchildren Jimmy and Billy Chambers, Cousin Betty Sousa and sister Janet
Vecente.
