Roy Joseph Papillon, age 90, entered into heaven on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, with his loving wife by his side. Roy was born on October 29, 1930, to Alma and Gerald Papillon in Northampton, Massachusetts. After graduating from high school, Roy enlisted in the Navy at a young age with his parent’s consent. During his time in the military, Roy became a Naval Corpsman before taking his skills to the Marine Corps. Roy was able to continue his education while serving his country and even graduated from USC. After 20 years of service, Roy retired from the military and became a hospital administrator in Southern California, before becoming a Medical Technical Assistant for the Department of Corrections.
In 1996 he met his wife Penny while planning on moving back to Massachusetts. Safe to say, it was love at first sight and he came right back to Penny. They made their home in the town of Oceano, California and 10 years later he finally retired and went to work as a volunteer. It wasn’t all work and no play, however, as Roy loved to golf and was a talented woodworker when he wasn’t helping out at the Arroyo Grande Hospital. Roy was an avid reader and his favorite pastime was gathering weekly with his men’s bible study group. His dedication to helping others is just part of the legacy he leaves behind.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Penny Papillon; sisters Lorainne Barrows, Janice Bartlett, Eleanor Duprey, and his many children and step-children. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alma & Gerald Papillon and his siblings Maureen, Norma, Lillian, Phyliss, Dennis, and Donald. At Roy’s request, his ashes will be scattered out at sea from a Navy ship in a traditional Military service.
