Ricardo “Carding” Cabanas Banez married Epitacia Calibuso Banez on March 2, 1968. Soon after, they immigrated from Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines to Galveston, Texas. Both his daughters, Elizabeth and Ruth, were born there in 1970 and 1972, respectively. In 1973, they moved to San Luis Obispo, California with his family of four. For many years, Ricardo enjoyed a successful venture in growing sugar peas and reaped the benefit of “the American dream” by spending long days at the farm.
Ricardo was a big sports fan, a fan of major league sports and the sports that his daughters played. He loved to watch all teams but most enjoyed the Lakers, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Dodgers. When it came to his daughters, you would always see him in the stands at their basketball and volleyball games. When Elizabeth played volleyball at UC San Diego, talk about dedication. He and Epitacia would make the drive down for a game, only to turn right around and drive home right afterwards.
In addition to raising his two daughters, he also took great joy in helping to take care of a number of his nieces. His specialty was effortlessly soothing and comforting them when they were crying, when no one else could console them. He also stood as a father figure to many of his nieces and nephews. In his senior years, he was well known at the Chumash Casino, sitting at the poker table.
Ricardo is survived by his wife Epitacia, daughters Elizabeth and Ruth, grandchildren Ryan, Kennan, Nolan, and Hazel…his siblings, Carmen and Rosita…and countless nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly.
