Mitzi Schlegel-Myers, 93, died peacefully on Monday, February 12, 2024. She was born in Oxnard, California, and spent the early years of her life living in Camarillo, California. She attended Somis School and Oxnard High School, graduating in 1949. Mitzi was a seventh-generation native Californian. She was a descendant of Jose Francisco Ortega, who came to Alta California with the Portola Land Expedition and Father Serra in 1769.
In 1951, Mitzi married her high school sweetheart, Eugene “Gene” Schlegel. Together, they had three daughters, Susan, Rebecca, and Jennifer. Mitzi worked in the medical field for several years. In 1962, the family moved to Grover City to join the family business, (C.S. Construction & Schlegel Bros. Equipment Rentals). While she took on the part-time role of bookkeeper, Mitzi’s main focus in life was always her family. She enjoyed traveling and getting together with family and friends. Her home was always a gathering place.
After Gene’s passing in 1984, Mitzi’s life continued to focus on family. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her sister and cousins. They dubbed themselves “The Golden Girls”! Mitzi was a very active Grandmother who was happy to care for her grandchildren whenever needed. She also attended all of her grandchildren's local sporting events and extracurricular activities. She seldom missed a game or performance.
In September of 1994, Mitzi married Cloyd Myers and began the next phase of her life, which included step-children and almost full-time RVing. She and Cloyd enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada. During their excursions, they made many friends far and wide. One of the highlights of each year was the few months they traveled through Oregon and Washington to go crabbing. Mitzi also gained a wonderful step-family, with whom she spent many happy occasions.
She is survived by her daughters, Susie Miner (Mike) and Jennifer Akers (Michael), and son-in-law, Michael Pischke. Grandchildren: Amy Filice (Paul), Bethany Miner (Mike), Scott Foster (Alicia), Stacey Kohler (Steven), Emilie Pischke, and 17 great-grandchildren.
