Leslie Wayne “Sam” Sayles was born on May 20, 1935, in Glendale,Arizona, and passed away on April 19, 2026, from a heart attack in Arroyo Grande, Ca
As a young boy, Sam lived in Highgate, Missouri, before moving to California, where he graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1953. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served aboard the USS Marias AO-57.
After his military service, he married and settled in Nipomo, Ca.
Sam worked in construction in his early life and for a hobby made furniture. He was a mechanic and later retired from Greenheart Farms in Arroyo Grande. He was known as someone who could fix just about anything. Sam also enjoyed talking about politics and sharing stories about his time in the Navy.
Sam loved fishing, hunting, clamming and abalone foraging.In his later years his passion for fishing intensified.After retiring, he hit the road in his RV to travel and fish.He traveled through Oregon and Washington before settling in the Corning/Chico area. In 2015, he moved to Grover Beach, California.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Lupe Sayles; his parents, Robert and Juanita Sayles; his brothers, Jess and Bob Tuck; and his stepson, Terry Aguirre.
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Deborah Lee; grandsons Christopher Wilson and Matthew Aguirre; granddaughter Lisa Aguirre; great-grandsons CJ and Noah; nephews Alan Tuck, Dean Tuck, niece Karen Apple and a large extended family.
Sam will be remembered for his service to his country, his hardworking spirit, his love of fishing, his ability to fix anything, and the many memories he leaves with those who loved him.
Per his request there will be no service. At a later date there will be a celebration of life.
