Larry Royal Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Larry Von Royal, “Big Larry”, a man whose larger-than-life personality touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Larry passed away at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, love, and a wealth of unforgettable stories.

Larry was a man of many talents and passions. He worked most of his life as an operating engineer as part of the Operating Engineers Union Local 12 (The Union). For several years he also worked as a commercial fisherman. A lifelong fisherman, he spent most of his life near the ocean he loved. He was involved with the Port San Luis Harbor District.

Larry had a deep passion for motorcycles, especially Hondas. As a member of the VTX motorcycle group, he spent countless hours restoring and fixing up bikes, bringing them back to life with his skilled hands. He loved cruising along the coast, enjoying the freedom of the road and the beauty of the California landscape.

A true enthusiast, he spent countless hours metal detecting and was a proud and active member of the Central Coast Treasure Hunters Association, always in search of buried treasures and the thrill of discovery.

Throughout his life, Larry’s home was filled with a variety of animals. From dogs, to cats, to exotic birds, which he nurtured with great dedication, Larry cared for any animal that crossed his path.

Larry was a beloved figure in his community, and was affectionately known as the Mayor of his cul-de-sac. He was always ready with a story or two to entertain anyone who would listen. His storytelling abilities were legendary—whether recounting a fishing tale or sharing his adventures, Larry’s tales were always larger than life.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Sumner, and his sister, Alaina Danforth. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Royal; his two brothers, Dennis (Marcella) and Lane Royal; his daughter, Jessica Royal Lakey (Dewey); his grandchildren, Samuel (Janaye) and Madelyn (Reilyn) Lakey; his stepdaughter, Bobbiejoe Johnson and her son, Herschel Von Johnson.

Big Larry lived life to the fullest, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 14th at 3pm at Pismo Beach Pier, where family and friends will gather to share memories, laughter, and stories, just as Larry would have wanted.

Rest in peace, Big Larry. Your spirit, energy, and stories will never be forgotten.
