Adventurer, artist, and cherished friend, Kathleen (Kate) Ann Jones, passed away on February 28, 2025, in San Luis Obispo, CA. She was born on June 12,1957 to Patricia and John Jones in Palo Alto, CA. Kate lived a life full of curiosity, laughter, and connection, making friends wherever she went - especially with those who shared her love of exploration and companionship. Her boundless energy took her across beaches, rivers, mountains, and cities, whether traveling and vacationing with her loving husband, Dan, by her side, or solo camping in "The Groovy Camper", her Westfalia van.
Kate captured nature, and especially animals, in her beautiful sketches, many of which grace the homes of her friends and clients, each piece reflecting her keen eye and creative soul. Her career and passions allowed her to live in a wide variety of places; from the front range of the Colorado Rockies in Denver, Colorado, to the scenic beauty of Lake Tahoe, to Santa Cruz and Aptos beach towns of California, and eventually to the banks of the Deschutes River in Sunriver, Oregon.
Her son, Ian, fondly remembers childhood moments especially watching The Muppets together, and the seemingly endless yet cherished walks to their favorite spot, Capitola Beach. Kate's granddaughter, Annabelle, shared a profound and unbreakable bond with her. Together they found joy in cooking, creating art, storytelling, and playing their special card games - moments filled with a love that will endure beyond a lifetime. Kate's brothers, sister, and their families, shared a deep and unbreakable bond throughout their lives. The loss of one sibling has left an irreplaceable void, and has taken a piece of each family member's soul.
When Kate retired and moved to Sunriver, she quickly formed the Big River Adventure Club (BRAC), bringing together a community of like-minded explorers. She kayaked the river, hiked countless trails, and created special bonds with those who shared her love of the outdoors. Her generosity and talent extended into her home. She was known for her incredible cooking and warm hospitality - always ready to entertain with a delicious meal and engaging conversation. As an avid reader and a skilled artist, Kate found joy in quiet moments with a good book and in her art studio. As an avid golfer, she loved the camaraderie she shared with her husband, and the challenges of the golf course. Kate approached life with inexhaustible vitality, a sharp wit, and a compassionate heart.
She leaves behind her devoted husband, Dan Ralph; her loving son, Ian Sternberger and his daughter, Annabelle; her brother Michael (Susan) and their son, Justin; her brother Brian (Kim) and their sons, Tom and Mike; and her sister Eileen and her children Kathleen, Ethan, and Patrick (deceased); and the multitude of friends and colleagues who will forever cherish the countless memories she created with them.
A celebration of Kate's life will be announced at a later date where friends and family will gather together to share stories, laughter, and love in her honor. Her spirit will live on in the places she loved, the art she created, and the people whose lives she touched.
