John Raymond McGrath, Sr. 88 of Arroyo Grande passed on October 8, 2025 in San Luis Obispo, CA.
John was born 1936 in Newton, Massachusetts to Louisa (Giovanella) and John Harold McGrath. As a child, he dreamed of living in California after watching the Rose Parade on a neighbor's small TV. He moved to California in the mid-1960's.
Retired February 2000 as a Coordinator for the Operating Engineers Training Trust Local 12. Also, John was an Operating Engineer in Locals 3 (Mass), and 4A (No. Calif) totaling 60 years holding various positions. John taught evening classes at Ventura Community College from 1970 to 1980.
John's activities never ceased. He always loved flying his Piper airplane. He was a member of the Oxnard Masons, Oceano Elks, and Central Coast Treasure Hunters Assoc.
He will be missed by his wife Joan Henderson McGrath of 43 years; loving grandsons Jared S. McGrath (Caitlin) of Washington; Justin Grant Pfeiffer (Krystal) of New Hampshire; Donna McGrath of Tehachapi, granddaughter Melissa Cordova of Tennessee; and five great-grandchildren; Mason brother Kenneth Pfeiffer (Sue) of New Hampshire; and sister-in-laws Kay Henderson of Grover Beach, CA, Jeanne McGrath and Sharon McGrath both of Massachusetts.
John was preceded in death by his son John Jr., his parents, and younger brothers Robert and Arthur and best friend Edward Phillips.
