Born April 11 1949 to George and Jane Nelles. She lived and attended elementary and high school in Kansas City, Missouri with her parents and John and Robert Nelles. She was planning to attend college in Wisconsin but parents didn’t want her fall in love and stay in Wisconsin so she attended the University of Kansas .. where she fell in love with a man from California and promptly left the Midwest to marry him and make a life there. A forever Jayhawk fan.
They moved to Los Angeles where she continued to take college classes and her first two children, David and Juliet were born. They then moved to the central coast in 1973 where Beth and Andrew were born. There she quickly built a strong community of life long friends , from the families they met through the pharmacy auxiliary, the neighborhood and then St Patrick’s Elementary and Church. Joanne steadfastly continued her education in library science and elementary education through everything. As was her nature she was an avid volunteer as her children went through St Patrick’s school and continued her support as an employee there for over 20 years. She had a tremendous impact on students as an advocate, Librarian and an Educational Aid for thousands of Celtics.
Joanne was a loving wife for 53 years to Mike Carroll , a tremendous mother and constant support to David ( Waikoloa HI) Julie ( Long Beach CA) Beth ( Haiti) and Andrew ( Austin TX) for over 50 years, and a doting Nana to her grandchildren Jane Acuff (19), Lauren Carroll (17), Max Acuff (16), Shane Carroll (15) and John Carroll (15). She selflessly gave of her time volunteering with the Friends of Shell Beach Library Board, at St Patrick’s Catholic Church Martha’s ministry, Outreach and the Alter Society Floral Committee.
Joanne had a empathetic heart for all she met and was deeply loyal to her friends and family. She loved to spread her joy with her kind notes, her tremendous heart and a beautiful flower arrangement. She will be greatly missed but her examples lives on with her husband, children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Friends of the Shell Beach Library, St. Pat's Outreach and St Pat's School.
