Jack Maurer Obituary

Jack Alexander Maurer (90) of Arroyo Grande, California passed away peacefully on April 24, 2023 surrounded by family and friends. Jack was born to Jacob and Rose Maurer on March 08, 1933 in Sterling, Colorado. Following his high school graduation and service in the Colorado National Guard, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 22, 1951 and served as a Morse Code Intercept Operator during the Korean War, eventually earning the rank of Radioman Petty Officer 1st Class.

During his Naval service, Jack discovered his life-long passion for learning. Upon his discharge he began his educational pursuits starting at Compton Junior College where his excellence in the classroom prompted his classmate Gilbert Jurak to introduce him to his sister Joan. Thus began the 63-year love affair of Jack and Joan. Jack married Joan on September 05, 1959 in Compton, California. He then went on to pursue a career in medicine graduating with an M.D. from the University of California at Irvine on June 06, 1963. Jack then specialized in Radiology receiving his board certificate from the American Board of Radiology on June 14, 1968. He moved his then growing family of six children with one on the way to the North Coast of California. Jack began a private practice in Arcata, California and also began working at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, California where he served as Chief of Staff in 1979 and 1980.

Jack is survived by his loving wife Joan Mary Maurer; and seven children, Paul (Martha) Maurer, Marie (Rodney) Maurer-Mock, Lisa (Mark) Hassen, Heather (Todd) Christie, Lara (Allan) MacDonald, Greta (Scott) Salhus, and John (Rebecca) Maurer; his brother Richard (Peggy) Maurer; his sister Theresa (Rick) Brown as well as his 17 beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Rose Maurer, as well as his sister Louella Jones, and her husband Kenneth Jones, and his sister Rosalie Brown.

Aside from his love of learning, Jack was also passionate about family, travel, drawing and his Catholic faith. He was an artist at heart with a keen sense of humor. His life-long passion for drawing is well displayed throughout his home, especially his portrait drawings of his wife, children and grandchildren. Jack and Joan traveled several times to Europe and welcomed many international exchange students into their home. In his later years, Jack along with Joan became regular offertory collectors at the 10:30am Mass at St. Paul The Apostle in Pismo Beach, California. Jack was a man who spoke his mind. He was generous to no end. Jack was a devoted and talented doctor, husband, father, brother, son and friend and he will be truly missed.

Jack’s family will host a Rosary at 10am followed by a funeral service at 10:30am and a reception to follow on Tuesday, May 02, 2023 at St. Paul The Apostle in Pismo Beach, California. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
