Irwin Leroy Abelson born April 7, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois passed away March 20, 2025 in San Luis Obispo, California. As a member of our greatest generation, Irwin enlisted at the age of 17 in the U. S. Coast Guard and served in the WW II Pacific combat theater supplying arms and munitions to the Marines as they liberated the occupied islands.
After the war, Irwin returned to Chicago where he attended college on the GI Bill and married the love of his life, Harriet. Together they raised two children, Ward and Stacy, while pursuing a successful career in the life insurance industry.
Upon retirement, Irwin and Harriet relocated to St. Petersburg Florida where he indulged in his two favorite hobbies: collecting classic movies and pre-WW II toy trains. Irwin also became an avid softball player and ultimately played with the renowned Kids & Kubs organization (75 years and older).
Irwin was preceded in death by Harriet, his younger brother Sheldon, his parents Nathan and Hilda, and survived by Ward Abelson and Stacy (Jerry) Ballard.
