Harriet Louise Shields, age 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Grover Beach, CA on September 9, 2023. Harriet was born in Porterville, CA to Alton (Tobe) Sheela and Helen Elizabeth Lawrence Creegan on November 1, 1933, where she was a member of the extended and loving Sheela family.
Harriet was preceded in death by her mother Helen Elizabeth Lawrence Creegan, father Alton (Tobe) Sheela, sister Georgia Sheela, step-sisters Ann (Creegan) Ball (with whom she was especially close), Merla (Creegan) Johnson, and Claire Creegan.
Surviving are daughter Kathryn Helen Shields of Grover Beach, with whom she resided, nephew Timothy P. Roberts of Salinas, half-sister Sandra Florence of Tucson, half-brother Greg Sheela of Fresno, cousins Barbara Hansen of Bakersfield, Cassie Klarich of Sandy, UT, John Sheela of Sonoma, and many other cousins in the extended Sheela and Lawrence families.
Harriet worked exceptionally hard as a bookkeeper and single mother. She worked in numerous places, including Gottschalks, Sanger Finance and Trust, Tagus Ranch Restaurant in Tulare, Columbo Construction in Bakersfield, Lakeshore Towers in Oakland, and was manager of Brock’s Federal Credit Union in Bakersfield for 17 years. When Brock’s Department Store closed, she grabbed an opportunity to move to the coast and went to work as office manager for Olde Port Inn and various fish companies in Port San Luis, where she had an office at the end of Harford Pier with a view of Avila Bay, harbor seals and sea lions, sea gulls and pelicans.
Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel is in charge of cremation. A private family service is planned with ashes scattered at sea in Port San Luis.
