Delwyn Glenn Wayner
9/29/1934-7/20/2025
Delwyn “Del” Wayner 90, went peacefully to be with his Heavenly Father on July 20, 2025.
Born to Chester and Cornelia Weener in Holland Michigan. He came from a very large family - his father having nine siblings and his mother also having nine siblings. He had one brother, Jim, and was very close to his 40+ cousins.
As a young man he worked alongside his cousins on his Grandfather’s farm; picking fruit, vegetables, and tending to the animals.
He graduated high school in 1952 and went to Hope College, but eventually transferred to Texas LeTourneau College to study Engineering. He continued there for a couple years until being drafted into the Navy on November 5, 1955 at the age of 21.
In the Navy he was a Senior Seaman at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, then was transferred and stationed at the San Diego Naval Base in California. Once on the ship he was assigned to radio communications duty, running the encrypting machine and in charge of tele-typing all communications. It was there that his love for travel began.
During his Naval career he traveled to South America, Canada, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
It was shortly after he left the Navy that he moved his young family north to San Jose, taking a job at a furnace company in sales. In 1963, his strong desire to finish college led him to pursue his degree in Business and Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State University. He started working for Shippers Express trucking company and simultaneously started his own janitorial business.
He worked in the trucking business for a couple of years before getting the opportunity to transfer his family of six to Arroyo Grande to work for Certified Freight lines in 1965.
Del was very active in the Arroyo Grande community. He was a member of the 5 Cities Jaycees, a board member on the Cemetery District and active in his Church.
In 1968 he was hired by the Lucia Mar School District as the Coordinator of Purchasing and Business Office Manager. It was there that he met his wife Betty, and they married in 1974. He continued to work in the school system and was hired at the Santa Maria Elementary School District as Assistant Superintendent of Business Services where he found a loophole in the California legislation which resulted in a higher amount of money per ADA for all students for the future. He worked hard for many years shaping the community.
He retired in 1991 but went on to teach vocational training seminars for the California Teachers Retirement System.
It was around that time, at the age of 57, that he started his softball career - playing in tournaments in Palm Springs, Utah, Las Vegas and the Bay Area. His crowning achievement was winning the 2014 Gold Cup World Senior Games. His softball career ended in 2017 at the age of 83.
Del was a teacher at heart, always willing to give advice, whether it be in travel, finances, gardening or faith. His passions were deep rooted and with his early days on Grandpa’s farm, acquired a love for gardening. He loved to see the results of all the hard work you put into it. He never missed a day looking for the best deals and the smile on his face when he found a great sale was priceless. He was strong in his faith and never missed an opportunity to share it with others. But his greatest fulfillment in life came from a passion for traveling the world with Betty and a love for his large blended family. His face beamed with happiness and pride whenever he was with them.
Del is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty Jo Wayner, children; J. Thomas Wayner, (Victoria), Teri Rodriguez, (David), Lori Wayner, (Kollene), Lisa Portwood, (Dave), Kathy Howse, (Gary), Rick Taylor, (Lori), 15 Grandchildren, 44 Great Grandchildren, and one Great Great Grandchild along with many nieces and nephews.
Del is predeceased by his Parents, Chester and Cornelia Weener, Brother, James Wayner and Son, Tom Taylor.

He smiled once more, then closed his eyes
Like Sunset fading from the skies
No pain, no fear, just gentle rest
A life well-lived, a man well-blessed
And although his body is no longer here,
In every memory we feel him near.
