Carl David Hassler, 69, passed away at home on October 6th, 2023 after
a prolonged roller-coaster ride with cancer.
He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Ray and Dorothy Hassler on
November 7th, 1953.
Carl gave a sense of how life looked from his perspective in 2022:
“I am pretty sure ‘auto-obituary’ is not a word. During my
formative years I learned of God's love and my family's love for me. I
felt loved and I loved deeply. After meeting the love of my life,
Sharon, we shared our love of God and life with our two sons Kevin and
Jimmy.
I was old enough to remember all four of my grandparents and lived
long enough to love and play with my grandchildren.
I do not consider my list of jobs, awards and accomplishments to be of
any importance, but I like to feel that I made a difference in some
lives.
I grew up in suburban St. Louis, graduated from Kirkwood High School
and attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
I then got a job selling insurance and collecting premiums in Kansas
City. After I met Sharon I followed her to Nebraska and then
California, where we were married in Sausalito on September 27th,
1980.
I started with UPS as a driver in Gardena California which began a
29-year career with the company. I was fortunate to transfer to the
Central Coast of California in 1989 moving to Arroyo Grande. UPS was
not my dream career, but it provided great benefits, vacations as well
as 10 hours a day of working out. I enjoyed visiting with everyone on
my route, to the point of warnings from management regarding time
efficiency.
When Kevin bridged from Cub Scouts into Boy Scouts, Sharon told me,
‘It's your turn to do the outdoor camping part’ which began my
time as Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 26. I never thought I'd outlast
both of my sons in Scouting but I continued having fun several years
after they were in college. What started off as having what seemed
like more sons has grown into a group of lifelong friends.”
Carl will be greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Sharon McCarthy
Hassler, his sons, Dr. Kevin Hassler (Linda), Jimmy Hassler,
grandchildren Levi and Allison.
He is survived by his mother Dorothy Hassler, brothers Mark Hassler,
Dale (Carol) Hassler, and sister Janet Hassler.
Brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Margaret Cunningham, Bob (Deb)
McCarthy, Michael Garth, Emma McCarthy, Patrick McCarthy, Joseph (Kim)
McCarthy, as well as countless cousins, numerous niblings (yes, it is
a word) and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 7th, 2023 at
