Betty June (Gardner) Sturges
1930-2023
Betty was born August 19, 1930, in Florence, Colorado. The
daughter of Otto Gardner and Mereta Goure. Passed away
September 7, 2023, at home amongst family. Betty was the oldest
of 5 children, one brother: Johnny, and four sisters: Carol, Jean, Judy,
and Mary.
Betty grew up in Arroyo Grande and graduated from Arroyo Grande
High School in 1949. She met the love of her life in high school, and
they married after she graduated. They had two daughters Karon
and Debby. She was a wife, mother to many, sister, bookkeeper for
the business, grandmother, and friend.
Betty loved spending time with family and friends. When her
daughters were younger, she worked part time at a children's
clothing store in Arroyo Grande, she coached Karon’s softball team
and they loved spending summer days together at Avila Beach.
Before purchasing their summer, cabin and spending the summer
months in South Lake Tahoe, the family would spend the summer
weekends on their boat at Lake Nacimiento. Betty and Frank bowled
together weekly and often got together with friends to play cards.
Other hobbies included playing solitaire while watching her favorite
TV shows, she loved to read books and her weekly trips to the
Chumash Casino. Betty lived her life with dignity, integrity, and love.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Frank
Sturges, her mother, father, and sister Mary. Betty is survived by
two daughters: Karon (Sturges) Tomlinson and Debra (Sturges)
Melby; four grandchildren: Aaron Sturges-Melby, Robyn Tomlinson-
York, Ian Tomlinson and Alexander Melby; and 8 great-
grandchildren: Aiden Sturges-Melby, Adalyn Sturges-Melby, Asher
Sturges-Melby, Wesley York, Cody York, Wyatt York, Orin Tomlinson,
Ogden Tomlinson, Harley Giese.
Funeral services are open to all and will be at Marshall-Spoo Sunset
Funeral Chapel. 1239 Longbranch Ave. Grover Beach, CA 93433. The
service will start at 1:11 PM on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023. A
Reception will follow.
