Benita E. Rede
"Bennie"
Benita E. Rede passed away at home in her sleep on Friday, December 5, 2025, at the age of 89, after a brave four-year battle with dementia. She was surrounded by love and her family was blessed to be with her in her final days.
Born on March 9, 1936, in Pacoima, California, Bennie was the tenth of eleven children of Julian and Leonor Escalante. After spending her early years in the San Fernando Valley, she moved north with her family to Watsonville, California, where she graduated from high school.
Bennie met her husband, Albert, at a community dance and said she knew she'd marry him because he was a great dancer and she liked his last name. They were wed on January 20, 1956, in San Diego and had seven children together They remained married for 47 years, until Al's death in 2002.
Bennie was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Arroyo Grande. The greatest joy in her life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed singing and dancing with them and sharing her favorite desserts with them. She loved sweets!
Benita is survived by her children and their spouses: Lucy and Jim Sartor, Sandy and John Mershon, Albert Rede, John and Janet Rede, Shelley and Tom Owens, and Patti and Rob Buchheit, twelve grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, her brother, Ernest, and numerous nieces and nephews, She was also blessed with a long list of "family of choice" that grew through the years. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her infant son, Benjamin, her parents and siblings, and her daughters-in-law, Donna Rede and Carol Rede-Twisselman.
The Rosary will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 17 with the Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will follow in the Arroyo Grande Cemetery.
Reception will be at the Grover Beach Community Center, 1230 Trouville Ave, Grover Beach, Ca 93433 immediately after interment.
