Don William Sperry

Don Sperry, 74, passed away March 12, 2018 at his home in Arroyo Grande after a short illness.  Don was born in 1944 in El Paso, Texas to James and Dolores Sperry and moved with his family to Bakersfield when he was two.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jeff and his half brother, Jay Sperry.

Don attended schools in Bakersfield, graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1962 and also attended Bakersfield College.  He was an avid Motorcycle and Midget Race Car driver in the 70’s & 80’s and was a member of the Sprocketts Motorcycle Club in Bakersfield.  Even after he retired from racing, Don remained an enthusiastic spectator and continued to travel to local and national races.

Don had been in the glass business for over 50 years, beginning with his association with Bakersfield Glass in the late 1960’s.  Don moved to the Central Coast and opened Window People in 1988 in Grover Beach with his wife, Theda, and a few years later, he re-opened Bakersfield Glass with Mike Rogers, to whom he eventually sold out in order to devote his full time to his central coast glass company.  

Don loved the game of golf and the life-long friendships it brought with it.  He would have played golf every day if it wasn’t for the fact that he was still running his glass business.  Don was always the first one to show up at the golf course when there was a game scheduled.  His golf buddies often said he was the only man they knew who could tell you what you did on what hole for years after you played it.

Don leaves behind his beloved wife Theda and his Step-daughter, Jayme Helm, his two children from a previous marriage, Lisa Lee and Ken Sperry and his sister, Jo Ellen Holt along with his many cherished friends and long-time business associates.

Golf Rule #9:  Tee it High and Let it Fly!

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Don Sperry’s name to the Arroyo Grande High School Golf Program or a charity of your choice.  A Celebration of Life will be held in Don’s honor on Saturday, April 14, 2018,  from 3:00-5:00 pm at the Cypress Ridge Pavilion, 1050 Cypress Ridge Pkwy, Arroyo Grande, California.
