In Loving Memory of Harold Blech
Harold Belch (Hal), a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and teacher, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on April 14, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Harold was born an identical twin in Augusta, Georgia, to loving parents Harold and Maria Belch. Following his father’s military service, the family moved to Plymouth, Michigan and eventually to Santa Barbra, California to be closer to maternal family.
Hal graduated from Santa Barbara High School where he was a diligent student and athlete. He received a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and History, and later obtained a master’s degree in administration at Cal-Poly.
He then pursued a career as a dedicated educator, inspiring countless students with his wisdom and compassion during his 38 years of teaching. Hal taught a variety of subjects such as psychology, sociology, marriage and family, and history. He taught through examples of his own individual life, using his family for inspiration. He also served in the Army during the Vietnam war and was a proud veteran.
Hal led a life dedicated to Christ and was a church Youth Group Leader while still in high school, which is how he eventually met the love of his life Renee. Hal had a heart for service leading to the creation of his convalescent ministry and was dedicated to the ministry for 39 years.
He married his one true love Renee in August of 1968. They were married for 55 years, honoring their vows every day.
Hal’s zest for life was evident in everything he did. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Hal cherished spending time with his family and friends, playing music, creating art through multiple mediums (pastel, oil paint, stained glass, and wood work), and he was a published author/illustrator.
Hal is survived by his wife, Renee; his brothers, Jerry, Alan, and Ken; his daughter, Shosana; his son-in-law, Dan; his son, Nathan; his daughter-in-law, Linda; his grandchildren Chase, McKenzie, Noah, Kendra, Ethan, and Jonah; borrowed daughter Lisa; borrowed grandchildren, Alex and Lauren; borrowed great-grandchildren, Wesley, Melani, Malachi, Lily, Hailey, Jason, Adelynn. Hal was preceded in death by both his father and mother. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 21st, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Renovate Church, 2075 Johnson Ave, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401. Flowers are always welcome to be delivered to Renovate Church.
Though he may be gone from our sight, Hal’s legacy of love and laughter will continue to live in our hearts forever.
Rest in peace, Big Papa.
