Spencer Lloyd Thomas was born in Los Angeles, California on October 14, 1941. After graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force, followed by the Los Angeles Fire Department, serving for over 20 years. After retiring from the LAFD, he moved his family to Arroyo Grande. He married Sheelagh Murtagh in 1971. He was a loving husband and father, and took his family for countless adventures. Spence had a love of the outdoors and a sense of adventure throughout his life. He was a teacher to many, and held a passion for learning. His interests included genealogy, motorcycling, and taking on new projects. He took pride in all that he did. Spence was dependable, brave, loyal, fair, balanced, interested, and always thinking of others. He was a great listener, which made him easy to talk to. He loved to laugh, and his jovial nature earned him many friends throughout the years. Spence passed away peacefully on July 11, 2017, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, Sheelagh, of 46 years; his children: Phillip, Melissa, Stephen and Shealyn; his sisters: Joyce and Janice; his niece and nephews, as well as numerous grandchildren. A service is scheduled for 11:00 am, Friday, July 21, 2017, at St. Patricks Church in Arroyo Grande.
